VERNON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Authorities have evacuated several dozen residents within a mile of a derailed Canadian National Railway freight train where a tank car carrying hydrochloric acid overturned and started leaking.
No injuries were reported from the spill or derailment Thursday night in Shiawassee County. The site is in a lightly populated area about 20 miles from Flint.
Durand fire Chief Richard Rinker says about 25 to 40 people were evacuated and some residents chose not to leave their homes. He said the evaucation was mailny precautionary.
Railroad spokesman Patrick Waldron says 11 cars on the eastbound train derailed about 5:30 p.m. He it's not yet clear what caused the cars to leave the track.
