The parents of some New York City public school students say they are shocked by their children's sex education curriculum, which includes details about sexual positions and bestiality, the New York Post reports.
The newspaper obtained copies of workbooks that are part of the Department of Education's "recommended" curriculum, which reportedly becomes mandatory in city middle and high schools next year.
The assignments reviewed by the Post include the following:
-- Students ages 11 and 12 sort "risk cards" to rate the safety of various activities, including "intercourse using a condom and an oil-based lubricant," mutual masturbation, French kissing, oral sex and anal sex.
-- Teens are referred to resources such as Columbia University’s website "Go Ask Alice," which explores topics like "sadomasochistic sex play," phone sex, oral sex with braces, fetishes and porn stars.
-- Teens research a route from school to a clinic that provides birth control and STD tests, and write down its confidentiality policy.
One New York City mother Shino Tanikawa, who has two daughters, including a high school junior, told the newspaper she was taken aback.
"I didn’t know how much detail they would get," she said.
The Department of Education, meanwhile, said in a statement that its curriculum "stresses that abstinence is the best way to avoid pregnancy and STD/HIV."
