MIAMI – The Miami parents charged with fatally beating their 10-year-old adoptive daughter are scheduled to make their first court appearance together.
Prosecutors will also announce Monday whether they'll seek the death penalty against Jorge and Carmen Barahona. The couple face first-degree murder charges and a slew of child abuse and neglect charges.
Authorities say for months, the parents hit twins Victor and Nubia with a shoe, whip or broom, bound their hands and feet and locked them in a bathroom, sometimes for days.
Nubia's body was found on Valentine's Day in the back of Jorge Barahona's truck. Victor, who survived, was dripping in a toxic chemical.
The Barahonas have waived their right to appear in court in hopes of avoiding media scrutiny, but a judge ordered them to appear Monday.
