A law enforcement officer assigned to a U.S. Marshal task force was fatally shot Thursday in North Carolina during a search for suspects as part of a murder investigation.

Officers were looking for suspects at a Lenoir County residence around 7 p.m. when shots were fired, killing Nash County Sheriff's Investigator Warren "Sneak" Lewis, WNCT-TV reported.

Five people were detained at the building, three of whom are wanted in the murder investigation of a restaurant worker, according to the station.

Nash County Sheriff Dick Jenkins released a statement Thursday evening confirming that one of his deputies was killed in the line of duty while trying to serve a warrant.

“Investigator Lewis was a gentle soul and would go out of his way to give you the shirt off his back, if he thought you needed it,” Jenkins said in the release. “He will definitely be missed, and he leaves a void at this office that will never be filled.”
