NJ lawmakers seek crackdown on steroid use by cops

Some New Jersey lawmakers want to start testing police and firefighters for steroids.

Some New Jersey lawmakers want to start testing police and firefighters for steroids.

Deputy Assembly Speaker Jack McKeon, a Democrat from West Orange, is also calling for a law that would require fitness-for-duty testing for public safety officers who have prescriptions for steroids or human growth hormones.

He proposed the measures Monday in reaction to a series in The Star-Ledger of Newark last month that found hundreds of police and firefighters were using the drugs to build up their strength.

Many of the officers paid for drugs with their public health benefits.

McKeon says he's outraged by that. He says the public may have to pay more in the future to treat health problems caused by the drugs.
