OLIMITO, Texas – A man who allegedly attacked four people with a machete in Paterson, N.J., was awaiting extradition from Texas on Monday after being arrested at a border crossing into Mexico.
Authorities detained Raul Suruy, 39, at the Los Indios International Bridge in Brownsville, Texas, on Thursday after matching him to an attempted homicide warrant, The Record reported.
He was transported to the Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center in Olimito, Texas, pending extradition to New Jersey.
Police said that Suruy attacked four people during a rampage at his ex-girlfriend's house Aug. 14.
He was discovered hiding with a machete in Yolanda Rivera's closet by her 11-year-old son, authorities said. He attacked Rivera's 15-year-old daughter, slashing at her head and hands, then attacked Enrique Santiago, 20, cutting his arms and head.
As Rivera attacked Santiago, the 11-year-old jumped onto Suruy in an attempt to stop him. Suruy then went into the kitchen, where he started a small fire, police told the newspaper.
When Rivera returned home with Ricardo Diaz, 28, Suruy slashed Rivera and broke her left arm. He also cut Diaz's neck area, head and hands before fleeing, the paper said.
No one was seriously hurt, and the fire was contained.
Suruy is expected to face aggravated arson and weapons charges in addition to the attempted murder charge.
