A gun-toting thief claiming to be an Iraq war veteran made off with $3,000 after knocking off a Manhattan bank, police sources said.

The armed crook, sporting brown and tan bandages on both sides of his face, waltzed up to a teller's window inside a Chase branch on West 23rd Street in Chelsea at about 5:18 p.m. Thursday, according to police sources.

He slammed his fist on the counter and quickly shoved a note through the slot.

"Unemploy IRAQ war vet I have a gun in my Pocket I want 2 stack $100 Bills No Die Pack or Dummie Pack Please I Don't want hurt any one one co worker," read the poorly written note, hastily scrawled on the back of a Capitol One Bank deposit slip.

"I was serving a customer and then he walked up to my window and demanded $100,000," teller Talla Talla, 48, told The Post yesterday.

"He gave me the note and said, 'Read that.' Then he showed me the gun."

A terrified Talla had never seen a gun before. He has worked at the branch for three years.

Talla described the gunman as "calm," noting that he also had a bandage over his left eye and wore a hood.

"I was scared because there was a lot of customers in the branch," said Talla.

"I thought, 'If I don't give him what he wants, he may start shooting people.' "
