Deputies say numerous residents of the area reported hearing the sound of a single rifle shot around 6 p.m. Monday.

A 23-year old purebred Arabian mare named "Miss Echo" was discovered shot in the left shoulder with a single round. The horse, valued at $5,000, died at the scene several minutes later.

Deputies say the investigation has been classified as a case of felony aggravated animal abuse that could result in a jail sentence and a fine up to $10,000 for a conviction.
