Homemade cloth rope aids St. Louis jail escape

Police are searching for two St. Louis jail inmates who broke through a second floor window and apparently escaped by climbing down a homemade rope.

Police are searching for two St. Louis jail inmates who broke through a second floor window and apparently escaped by climbing down a homemade rope.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the escape happened Friday morning. Dark cloth seen dangling from the second floor appeared to be sheets or tablecloths tied together.

One of the men was being held on charges of assaulting a police officer. The other was being held for destruction of property and burglary.

A police officer told the newspaper the inmates may have been out for up to 90 minutes before authorities realized they were gone.
