Georgia Police Department Uses Facebook to Reach Accused Cop Killer

A police department in Georgia is using its Facebook page to ensure the suspect in the shooting of two officers that he won't be harmed if he surrenders.

A police department in Georgia is using its Facebook page to ensure the suspect in the shooting of two officers that he won't be harmed if he surrenders.

The suspect, Jamie Hood, can "arrange to turn himself in without fear of bodily harm simply by calling 911 or 706-546-5900," according to a message posted early Friday on the Athens-Clarke County Police Department's Facebook page.

Friends and relatives of Hood have told investigators that he fears law enforcement officers will kill him if he attempts to surrender.

"This is simply not the case:  all of the law enforcement agencies searching for Mr. Hood are trained to use deadly force only in response to life threatening [resistance]," the post continues.

Authorities have been searching for Hood since Tuesday, when Athens-Clarke County Police Officer Elmer "Buddy" Christian was fatally shot while attempting to apprehend Hood. A second officer, Tony Howard, was shot in the face and upper body. He is recovering.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
