NEW YORK – A former Texas FBI agent was convicted Tuesday of making false statements about a confidential source after he had an intimate sexual relationship with her.
Adrian Busby, 37, of El Paso, Texas, was convicted of four counts of making false statements in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, where sentencing was set for March 8. The charges carry a potential prison term of up to 20 years.
Authorities said Busby had an intimate sexual relationship with the woman in 2008 and 2009 after she became a confidential source. She had been arrested by New York police on identity theft and related charges.
Prosecutors accused Busby of making numerous false statements regarding the steps he took to assist the woman during a criminal trial in Queens that resulted in her conviction. The government presented evidence at trial including text messages Busby sent the woman's defense attorney.
The false statement charges also stemmed in part from government allegations that Busby denied knowing the confidential source was under investigation when he signed her up as a source. The government also said he claimed he did not begin a sexual relationship with her until after she was no longer an FBI source.
Busby denied the allegations against him.
