JACKSON, Miss. – A Mississippi man once sentenced to death for killing a police officer has now pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Defense attorney Bob Evans says Cory Maye was sentenced Friday to 10 years and will be released from prison soon because he's already served more than nine years.
Maye maintains he thought police were intruders when they kicked in his door during a 2001 raid in Prentiss. He says he was defending himself and his young daughter when he fired shots, one of which killed officer Ron Jones.
Maye says he didn't hear police announce themselves. He was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death in 2004. His death sentence was overturned in 2006, and Maye was then re-sentenced to life without parole.
Last year, the Mississippi Supreme Court ordered a new trial.
