Developer must overcome own words in murder trial

ORLANDO, Fla. – A millionaire developer from metro Orlando is on trial for killing his wife, and the toughest witness he faces may be himself.

Bob Ward told a dispatcher five times that he had shot his wife during a 911 call in September 2009.

Jurors heard a recording of that call during the start of Ward's second-degree murder trial this week in Orlando in the same courthouse as the Casey Anthony case.

The 63-year-old Ward is charged with shooting his 55-year-old wife, Diane. He says he tried to take a gun away from his wife when it went off accidentally.

But prosecutors said gunshot testing shows that Diane Ward was shot 18 inches away, making it difficult for the wounds to be self-inflicted.

The trial is expected to last two weeks.
